Camera resolution decides whether you can actually identify a face or read a number plate from your footage — yet many buyers either underspend on blurry 2MP cameras or overspend on storage-hungry 4K. Here's how to pick the right resolution for each spot.
2MP (1080p) cameras are perfectly fine for general indoor coverage, small rooms and short distances, and they're light on storage. 5MP cameras capture noticeably more detail at distance — ideal for entrances, parking, perimeters and anywhere you need to recognise faces or plates clearly.
Match Resolution to the Job
Use 2MP for hallways, small shops and interior coverage; use 5MP (or 4K) for entrances, gates, parking, long driveways and license-plate capture. Remember higher resolution means more storage and bandwidth — size your hard drive and recorder accordingly, and use H.265 compression to stretch retention. A mixed system (5MP at critical points, 2MP elsewhere) is the most cost-effective design. SecureVision recommends the right mix during a site survey.
